All movements that challenge the ruling order will ineveitably be repressed. Repression can’t be avoided, but we can mitigate its harm. Repression seeks to demobilize and isolate elements of movements from their broader support. Moreover, repression provides movements the opportunity to activate the community, to uplift the demands of social struggles, and to direct skepticism and animosity to the courts, the police, and the state.
