SUMMARY:How to build Political Defense Committees: Reflections from the Jack and Jakhi Support Committees
DESCRIPTION:All movements that challenge the ruling order will ineveitably be repressed. Repression can’t be avoided\, but we can mitigate its harm. Repression seeks to demobilize and isolate elements of movements from their broader support. Moreover\, repression provides movements the opportunity to activate the community\, to uplift the demands of social struggles\, and to direct skepticism and animosity to the courts\, the police\, and the state. \n\n\n\nDefense committees support defendants in jail\, at court\, and in their political and social lives. Learn from the Jack and Jakhi support committees on how to build political defense committees. Jack is a Stop Cop City defendant charged with arson in 2024\, and Jakhi is a Pro-Palestine defendant charged with arson in 2025. \n\n\n\nLearn more at Freejack.co or jakhisolidarity.noblogs.org

SUMMARY:Beyond lifestylism: contemporary case studies in organizing for animal liberation
DESCRIPTION:The hyper exploitation of non human animals is integral to capitalism. Anarchists across the globe have strategically organized and enacted actions in solidarity with animals\, beyond the known cases of the ALF\, the ELF and SHAC. We will be unpacking contemporary case studies from Wisconsin\, Pennsylvania\, Chile and Costa Rica to survey the diversity of approaches in different contexts. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

SUMMARY:What the 19th Century Revolutionaries Have to Teach Us
DESCRIPTION:In this afternoon-long seminar\, we will trace the lives and ideas of a number of European revolutionaries across several decades in order to understand the emergence of Marxism and anarchism. \n\n\n\nSocialism\, communism\, and anarchism came into their own as social movements in the revolutionary ferment of the 19th century. Starting with the debates among philosophy students and working-class participants in the revolutions of 1848\, we will trace the emergence of these three currents in the labor organizing that led up to the Paris Commune and the debates that followed between those who wanted to impose a hierarchical party model on the movement and those who sought to contest domination in all of its forms. \n\n\n\nFrom the 20th-century experiments with state socialism through the 21st-century resurgence of autocracy\, the questions that the revolutionaries of the mid-19th century confronted have only become more pressing with the passing of time. In revisiting their experiences and reflections\, we can equip ourselves to think and act more effectively today.

SUMMARY:Class Struggle in the Atlanta Forest
DESCRIPTION:We Make History but Not As We Please: Class Struggle in the Atlanta ForestPresented by Sasha Tycko \n\n\n\nThursday May 21st\, 4pmSouth Bend Commons \n\n\n\nWhen the movement to Defend the Atlanta Forest began\, it had two development projects as its target: a police training center (“Cop City”) and a campus of movie soundstages that would be built on public parkland won by a private developer in a “land swap” with the county (“Hollywood Dystopia”). The forest itself grew on abandoned fields planted first as an antebellum plantation\, then maintained as a Jim Crow prison farm. As Stop Cop City became the national identity of the movement\, however\, the forest\, its history\, and the land swap dropped out of public conversation. As we reflect today\, how might refocusing our attention on these aspects of the movement inform how we understand its objectives? \n\n\n\nBased on three years of research in and about the Atlanta forest\, Sasha Tycko will present what she learned about the oft-misunderstood history of the prison farm and what it reveals about the changing dynamics of race\, class\, and property in the South. By placing Cop City and Hollywood Dystopia within this historical context\, she will then discuss what they indicate about new forms of political capitalism in twenty-first-century America. Karl Marx echoes prophetic through the treetops: humans “make their own history\, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances\, but under circumstances existing already\, given and transmitted from the past.” After Sasha’s presentation\, there will be ample time for discussion about the long struggle to defend the Atlanta forest.

SUMMARY:"We Make Our Own Safety": Urban Autonomy and the Art of Living Otherwise\, presented by Sam Law
DESCRIPTION:Located in the rough-and-tumble peripheries of Mexico City\, Acapatzingo is one of the largest urban autonomous territories in the Americas. Over the past 30 years\, the roughly 5000 residents — members of a revolutionary housing movement known as the Panchos — have transformed a barren plot of land into a self-organized community where everyday needs are collectively met through horizontal decision-making\, rotating labor\, and mutual aid. For the Panchos\, autonomy is not an objective but a way of life: an art of living otherwise that builds habitable alternatives to the dominant order through the ongoing development of shared capacities and social relations capable of sustaining a dignified life. This talk focuses on one of the most striking dimensions of this project: the community’s production of its own safety without police. In Acapatzingo\, the police don’t enter. Instead\, a rotating guard keeps watch at the gates\, every member carries a whistle and a stick\, and when the whistle blows\, the whole community assembles. From the conscious refusal to specialize “violence work” to the brigades that deliberate over how to sanction neighbors who come to blows\, the Panchos have built what might be called actually existing abolitionism — not a theoretical argument against policing but a set of concrete\, imperfect\, and evolving practices in which safety is something people make together. Based on two years of ethnographic research living inside the community\, this talk explores how autonomy as a lived practice of emancipation unsettles established visions of politics\, operating not through critique or contestation but through the collective capacity to generate worlds worth inhabiting.

SUMMARY:All the things I can talk about mean nothing to me:
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Reading and Conversation \n\n\n\n\n\nA two-part event\, especially for readers and writers of poetry!  \n\n\n\nFirst\, a reading featuring 5 poets from Atlanta and across the broader South. Second\, a discussion circling what it means to be a poet within movements. This is not a panel discussion\, but a conversation that all in attendance are invited to participate in.  \n\n\n\nSome questions we will consider: \n\n\n\nWhat role does poetry play in movements? Can poetry serve a revolution? Should it?  \n\n\n\nPoetry as a way of imagining a new world\, poetry as elegy… What is a “political” poem? Who (or what) do you write for? What do you owe them? \n\n\n\nHow do you protect you and your loved ones inside your poems? What is your relationship to privacy\, security\, and opacity in your work? Are you loyal to imagination? Are you loyal to truth? Is it difficult to speak? Do you share your poems publicly? \n\n\n\nIf poetry “does” anything\, what does it do? What might we make it do?

SUMMARY:Parenting on the Left
DESCRIPTION:Parenting is an act of political hope – that it is worth bringing new humans into the time that lies ahead. Please join us for an open community discussion about parenting on the left. All are welcome. Parents\, and those who grew up as children in politically active homes\, are especially encouraged to come and share wisdom. \nSome questions we will consider – \nWhat structures and cultural practices can we put in place to support an intergenerational culture in our struggles\, and ensure that becoming a parent doesn’t mean dropping out of politics? \nHow does becoming a parent change your political life? \nWhat does raising politically engaged children look like\, at different stages of development? \nWhat is it like to grow up in a politically engaged family?

SUMMARY:CounterSpy
DESCRIPTION:A Conference on Countersurveillance \n\n\n\nFree to AttendMay 1-3\, 2026Hosted in Atlanta\, Georgia \n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s an open secret that governments surveil activists. They prefer to keep their methods obscured and mystified\, but we have a right to know how surveillance really works in practice. \n\n\n\nThis is a digital security conference\, but it’s not about fixing mistakes and vulnerabilities to help corporations run more smoothly. We’re not here to do cyber police work\, we’re turning the tables. \n\n\n\nRooted in real threats activists have faced from state repression\, CounterSpy is a space dedicated to curiosity-driven exploration of surveillance techniques and for strategizing around privacy\, digital security\, and organizational opacity for social movements.
